Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Federation of International Bandy (FIB)
This year, we proudly celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Federation of International Bandy (FIB), a valued member of ARISF. From its ancient roots to its recognition as an IOC recognised sport, bandy’s remarkable journey highlights its enduring legacy and the commitment of those who have dedicated themselves to its growth and global reach.
The Evolution of Bandy: A Journey Through History
Bandy’s origins can be traced back to ancient civilisations, with the first representations found in Egyptian tombs (2000 B.C.) and Greek frescoes (500 B.C.), showcasing a stick-and-ball game that later evolved into the sport we recognise today. The modern version of bandy began in England in the late 19th century, with the establishment of the National Bandy Association in 1891 and the creation of the first rules by Charles Goodman Tebbutt in 1882.
The sport grew steadily in the early 20th century, particularly in Scandinavia and Russia. Bandy was first introduced to the Winter Olympics as a demonstration sport in 1952 in Oslo, featuring teams from Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
A defining moment in bandy’s international development occurred on 12 February 1955 in Stockholm, when the Federation of International Bandy (FIB) was established. Uniting the national associations of Finland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden, the FIB became the sport’s global governing body, setting the stage for its expansion worldwide.
In 2004, the FIB achieved full recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), further strengthening bandy’s status as an internationally recognised sport and becoming a member of ARISF.
