ISMF Celebrates Inclusion of Ski Mountaineering in the Olympic Winter Games French Alps 2030
The Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF) warmly congratulates its Member Federation, the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF), following the decision of the 146th Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to confirm ski mountaineering as part of the sports programme for the Olympic Winter Games French Alps 2030.
The decision represents a significant milestone for ski mountaineering and reflects the continued evolution of the Olympic Winter Games programme. Following its highly successful Olympic debut earlier this year at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, the sport will return in 2030 with five medal events, further strengthening its place within the Olympic Movement.
The inclusion of ski mountaineering in French Alps 2030 highlights the sport’s strong connection with the heritage and culture of mountain regions, while also recognising its growing international reach and appeal to younger generations. The successful introduction of the sport at Milano Cortina 2026 demonstrated ski mountaineering’s ability to deliver exciting competition, engage spectators and contribute positively to the Olympic programme. In recent years, the sport has experienced substantial growth worldwide, supported by the dedication of athletes, officials, volunteers and National Federations.
ISMF President, Mrs Regula Meier welcomed the decision, stating:
“Today’s decision is a proud moment for everyone involved in ski mountaineering. Having our sport confirmed for the Olympic Winter Games French Alps 2030, with five medal events across Sprint, Individual and Mixed Relay, is a significant milestone for our entire community.(…) This is a shared achievement, and I would like to thank our athletes, our National Member Federations, the ISMF Council, officials, volunteers and everyone who has contributed to this journey. We now look forward to working with all our partners to deliver an outstanding Olympic competition in 2030.”
